The Field Irish Pub- Gaslamp Quarter

There are two things Ian and I do not do enough – one, visit the Gaslamp Quarter downtown and two, go to Irish pubs. So whaddya know, in this week’s blog, we check both of those boxes! A few weeks ago, we had a real Sunday Funday. We saw Wicked at the Civic Center Theatre, hit up Free Play Sunday at Coin Op Downtown, then ended up at The Field for dinner. It was a day full of eating, drinking, love, and fun.

The Field is a really cool Irish Pub located in the Gaslamp District downtown. Interesting fact about the building, the wood is actually all imported from an old pub in Ireland. It is loaded down with home decor and relics. Our waitress was even Irish, so they really nailed the details!


We started our meal with two Irish ales. I went for a cream ale on nitro and Ian chose the red from Kilkenny (predisposed due to the ‘Pride O’ Kilkenny’ that the Bassett Bros often play). Both were yummy and smooth. For an appetizer, we split some seriously amazing potato skins. These suckers were up there, and I’ll tell you what, I am a connoisseur of potato skins (I’m a high class girl y’all). The key to a good potato skin is a good crunch on the bottom. Then they topped it with yummy Irish cheddar, smokey bacon, and green onions. Slather some sour cream on top and you have a slam dunk (I’ve been watching too much DDD again).


For dinner, we stuck with the classics. Ian got the incredible Shepherd’s Pie. Smooth, creamy mashed potatoes (i.e. mash for you Irish folks) on top of warm, perfectly seasoned meat and veggies. It warmed the soul and the heart. I got the fish and chips (Ian’s least favorite thing in the world- so I didn’t have to share!). These were some of the BEST fish and chips I’ve had in the states. Exceptionally crunchy beer battered breading, flaky tender fish, and thick tasty fries. The tartar sauce was the cherry on top of the cake.

I seriously think I have been missing out on Irish food my whole life. Why have I not eaten it more? It is filling, homey, and warming all at the same time. I told Ian we will go back to The Field (for more than just beers like college Ian used to go for). Do you have any favorite Irish spots? Message us or comment for some suggestions! A note from Ian:  How could you forget Arielle?  There was a PEANUT BUTTER WHISKEY SHOT on the menu!  I was trying to be good.  I really was, then Arielle decided to text my twin brother Sean to pressure me into getting it.  So in terms of peer pressure, I had Arielle in front of me, the waitress saying “it’s really good” and then my brother texting “do it.”  I did it.  It was absolutely glorious, like a peanut butter boozy pie milkshake that made you happy on the inside.

    Peanut Butter = Good. Not sure about the Irish inventing it but they did invent drinking. Have to try.

    I love fish n chips at an Irish Pub. What kind of meat was in the Shepard pie, lamb?

    For your next Irish experience, I recommend Hooley’s in La Mesa! It is a bit of a drive, but worth it. I recommend the corn beef nachos, Yum!
