Grater Grilled Cheese– Mission Valley

The Dineamic Duo is very in synch most of the time when it comes to food choices. We like a lot of the same things (hence why we have made it so far). The one thing we differ on is our stance on cheese! Ian is kinda whatever about it. He will only eat it incorporated in a dish (and mostly when melty). He will NOT eat a cheese plate. I, on the other hand, will eat it plain and by the handful. I will eat it however you put it in front of me. Any kind- stinky, soft, sweet, melted, whatever! So, imagine the difficult choices that ensue at a grilled cheese place! I had been begging Ian to go, and finally he obliged! This place is so funky (cheese pun) and inventive, that even he enjoyed it!

Grater Grilled Cheese is a little grilled cheese bistro in Mission Valley. They do more than just your routine grilled cheese on white bread. They do tricked out sandwiches and sides. My personal favorite is the RB grilled cheese. It is the perfect mix of tangy and sweet. It has Roquefort and brie cheese topped with arugula, Balsamic grilled onions, and a pear walnut spread. The bread is perfectly toasted with melted soft cheese and sweet touches. It is perfection. Ian enjoys the Grater Grilled cheese. Which is shocking because it comes with five plus cheeses! This beautiful sandwich is their blend of five cheeses (PLUS goat cheese plus some other goodies. These other goodies include applewood smoked bacon, roasted bell peppers, balsamic caramelized onions, arugula, and smoked jalapenos. Oh yeah, and three spreads. It is pretty great! Ian relates it to a jalapeno popper. The avocado grilled cheese is also simple perfection.

What’s the perfect side dish for grilled cheese? Tomato soup, baby! The tomato basil soup is heartwarming. It tastes like your childhood in a bowl. It’s warm and acidic. The perfect sidekick to the creaminess of the cheese. Also, the pomme frites are delicious. Beautifully crispy and then soft on the inside. The dipping sauces pair perfectly with it (the garlic aioli is especially tasty).  They make them with all sorts of yummy toppings, we just haven’t ventured that far yet! Also, the Caesar salad is surprisingly good!
