Hello faithful readers! I have crawled out of hibernation (READ: quarantine) to bring y’all a fresh new blog this week! What could be so good that it caused me to return to the world of food blogging? Why, I am so glad you asked! The food that has brought fire back to my soul comes from a fantastic little local chain of restaurants called Cotixan Mexican Food!

Ok, well y’all already know we love Mexican food in all shapes, sizes, and packages. (Ian is even known to frequent Taco Bell). That being said, nothing gives us the warm and fuzzies like a good taco shop! Cotixan is that- and then some. It has everything you would want in a taco shop AND all the great favorites from a mom and pop restaurant as well.

Cotixan has multiple locations in the San Diego area including Point Loma, Clairemont, Encinitas, and Mira Mesa. The cool thing is that their locations each offer a slightly different menu! All of their locations are COVID-19 friendly. Their drive-thrus are open 24/7 and they are practicing Coronavirus safe practices!

I know you are all on the edge of your seats waiting to hear about the food. I bet you’re like “shut up Arielle and describe some food! That is why we are here!” I hear you, and I respect you, readers. We have eaten at Cotixan a lot since quarantine started. More than most people would care to admit. So we have been lucky to try a lot of things on the menu! While we have liked every single thing we have eaten, there have definitely been some standouts. First, the nachos…. are otherworldly. Our favorite thing about Cotixan is they do not skimp on the toppings! For anything! Handfuls of melty cheese, good crunchy chips, mounds of guacamole, large spoonfuls of sour cream and about a pound of meat. If you get nothing else out of this blog, then just go get the nachos. The carne asada is stellar. It is tender, juicy, and flavorful with the perfect amount of char. You can put the carne asada in their AMAZING chimichangas as well. I mean- did you know such a perfect thing existed? I did not and it may have changed my life to find it out. The tacos have all been fantastic as well. We strongly recommend the hard shell/crunchy ones! The rolled tacos and flautas are up there with some of the best we have ever had! Again, the amount of toppings on them are just amazing. You won’t regret ordering them. We also had the chips and guacamole and man, is that a steal! A big old pile of chips topped with guacamole and cheese. Just the perfect “little” side dish to go with your delicious main munchies.

One last thing that deserves a mention are the salsas at Cotixan. The green salsa is a classic- exactly what you want from a green salsa. Tangy, full of tomatillo flavor, and sharp to cut through those beautiful fatty flavors. However, the red salsa is unlike anything we have ever had before. Smoky, slightly creamy, tangy, and just overall amazing. I think both of us could just drink it straight. We get both salsa’s every time we go, but tend to fight over “who is using more red.” That should be an indicator.

Ok enough rambling, I have made myself hungry again! I know where Ian and I will be heading this weekend… over to Cotixan for large quantities of delicious Mexican food!

I used to live across the street from one of their shops, so dangerous, so delicious!
