In (belated) honor of the Dineamic Duo’s three year anniversary of being an amazing couple, we are going to talk about the first drinking establishment Ian ever took me to in San Diego way back in 2014.
As many of you know, Ian and I first met in 2014 when my cousin (Cayla) and her now- husband (Bob) took me down to San Diego to celebrate my 24th birthday. I was out on the west coast doing an externship during vet school. For Ian, it was love at first sight. For me….. Well, let’s just say the best love grows with time, right? But who am I kidding, I was smitten with his charm and his good looks! Anyways… the twins took us out for a night on the town. Our first stop of the night was to Blind Lady Ale House in Normal Heights. Ian and I have been frequenting this spots for drinks ever since, but it wasn’t until recently that we started eating there too. We have been twice in the last month we like it so much!
Blind Lady not only has great craft beer and specialty pizzas, but they are expanding their menu with ever-changing specials, appetizers, and desserts. Next on our to-do list is to stop by for one of their pasta nights ( I believe they are on Thursday nights). They are cranking out fresh, handmade pasta each week! Let’s talk pizza. The crust for their pizza is perfectly wood-fired with a nice crisp exterior and chewy center. The toppings are fresh and inventive. There are so many combinations to choose from, you could never get bored! I highly recommend you get the Belgian frites. A heaping order of beautiful, thick Kennebac fries served with a delicious selection of dipping sauces. They are some of the best fries I have ever enjoyed (and I love me some fries y’all). The pastry chef has also been working hard coming up with special dessert items. We recently enjoyed a strawberry and sea salt pavlova. One of our FAVORITE new desserts (largely influenced by Paul Hollywood of GBBS). This one did not disappoint with a refreshing flavor combination and a nicely textured meringue.
Last weekend was our favorite BLAH experience so far (their acronym… not mine). They were running some great food and beer specials for St. Patrick’s Day that included a corned beef pizza! The pizza had vintage Irish cheddar, house-made corned beef, roasted purple cabbage, and a scallion, sour cream, and mustard reduction. It was.. Wow. We may have found what we are going to make at home next year with the leftover corned beef from Ian’s famous corned beef tacos! The best part of the whole thing was the vintage cheddar- perfect little kick to round everything out. Personally, I do think some sliced potatoes would take it right over the top, but again, we have established I love potatoes. I also would not have minded a little heavier hand with the corned beef. While we were there we tried the warm potato salad (yes… I did take the potatoes and put them on my pizza… do not judge). The tangy mustard worked beautifully with the creamy roasted potatoes and crunchy spring peas.
All’s well that ends well, but I am seriously kicking myself for all the times we went to BLAH just to have the beer. The food is just too good y’all.
